Campaigns
Here are some campaigns which I believe in. Some are more serious than others but I do not wish to let that take anything away from the more serious ones. I recommend you check them all out.
DRM is Defective By Design
DRM is one of those things which someone, somewhere probably thought was a good idea once. In reality it has turned out to be a curse and it's one of those things which needs to die soon - IT-wise. DRM inhibits your legal rights and freedoms in many ways. It harks back to Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
It hinders your legitimate legal use of digital media. This is not about P2P file sharing, it is about sharing things with yourself, such as TV shows or music albums in your own home or PMP. They are also dictating which OS you must use, locking you into either Windows or Mac.
OOXML for ISO certification
This is absolutely unbelievable, it really is. Microsoft is trying to push through some of it's new Office file format for approval. You ought to read through this article and think about some of the examples that the author shows as to how flawed their new format is and why it shouldn't be allowed in. It really is astounding that something so flawed and unworkable is being pushed through for ISO certification!
Freedom of Press
The slogan on one of their posters says it all: At the rate they're killing off journalists in Iraq you'll soon have to go there and get the news yourself
.
Another image I like is Where are the journalists?
. The way the media nowadays is portraying the news around the world it is hard enough to get realistic news without the journalists themselves being the subject of such difficulties. I really support what RSF stand for.
Another campaign of theirs is Internet Censorship, if you think this is not important then check out the Wikipedia entry on 'Internet Censorship' and you might be surprised as to the extent that it goes.
Democracy in Vietnam
Vietnam is a Communist State and as such many of the people do not have basic human rights. Recently, on my travels, I experienced the 'Freedom of Speech' aspect of this. I was unable to access my website on numerous occasions due to the National Firewall in Vietnam which restricts people's freedom to information and expression. As one such example "Vietnam jails internet dissident" in 2002. There are numerous cases of this but this one hit the news for some reason.
